ROBOTIC SURGERY

What is Robotic Surgery?

This is an advanced minimally invasive technique for surgery using a surgical robot. Similar to traditional laparoscopic surgery, the surgical dissection is performed with instruments inserted into the abdomen via ports placed in keyhole incisions (5-8mm in size). The abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to create a space to operate within. In robotic surgery, the keyhole instruments are held and driven by robotic arms. The surgeon sits at a seperate operating console, and drives the surgical robot to perform the surgery.

What are the benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Robotic surgery offers numerous advantages over traditional laparoscopic or open (laparotomy) techniques.

  • reduced postoperative pain
  • reduced bloods loss
  • shorter hospital stays
  • reduced chance of converting to open surgery
  • enhanced visualisation, precision and control
  • enhanced dexterity and ergonomics

What procedures can be performed robotically?

Within gynaecology and gynaecological oncology:

  • hysterectomy (removal of uterus and cervix)
  • myomectomy (removal of fibroids)
  • salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of fallopian tube and ovary) and ovarian cystectomy
  • excision of endometriosis
  • lymph node dissection for staging of gynaecological cancers

Can I have my surgery robotically?

Robotic surgery is feasible and appropriate for many patients, however an individual assessment will be made (based on your diagnosis, imaging investigations, medical and surgical history) to determine the most appropriate and safest method of surgery for you.
